Health services

The local authorities collaborate on shared health services:
Midwife service: All the local authorities offer a midwife service with 24 hour cover.
Ambulance service: In addition to the standard ambulance service, Norsk Luftambulanse has a base at Dombås. The air ambulance is a vital supplement to the acute medical services in the region.
Healthcare express: For patients who do not need the standard ambulance service, Sykehuset Innlandet runs a special bus service between Dombås – Lillehammer hospital - Gjøvik hospital. The service also runs between the hospitals in the Mjøs region and to hospitals in the Oslo region.
Hospitals: Nord-Gudbrandsdal District Medical Centre at Otta is under construction, and will be opened in 2010. This new centre will give the region a major boost and expansion of medical services, including X-ray and dialysis plus out-patient specialist services.
District Psychiatric Centre at Otta provides polyclinic services for children and adults, and a psychiatric hospital south of Otta.
The District Psychiatric Centre and the future District Medical Centre are linked to Sykehuset Innlandet.
